  • Verbatim interpreting

  • This is when an interpreter provides accurate professional communication.

    Verbatim is defined as an exact repetition without changing the words. An example of verbatim is when you quote someone exactly without changing anything.

    This can be done using simultaneous interpreting, where the interpreter talks at the same time as the client and the service provider. ( court settings mainly)

    It can also be done for consecutive interpreting: this where the interpreter only intervenes after each sentence. ( counselling sessions, interviews)

  • Verbatim interpreting can be used for legal matters, interpreting for a statement for example or at a court hearing. I also use verbatim interpreting for training sessions or therapy sessions.

  • Bi-lingual advocacy which can be used as a preparation of a hearing for example.

  • Bilingual advocacy is used for clients that require help making a decision or completing a form for example.

    A bi-lingual advocate provides advice and information to help Non English speakers to access services.

  • Bi-lingual advocacy can be really useful in Health settings. It helps raise awareness about cultural norms so health professionals can provide care and treatment in a culturally sensitive way. These are few examples where I used advocacy : completing a pre op assessment , doing a health assessment with the patient. The advocacy helps bridging cultural differences as well as the language gap. For example ,cultural differences between doctors and their patients are common and may have important implications for the clinical encounter. I have had this instance where a Moroccan patient was offended by the question “ Do you drink alcohol”, this was regarded as a violation of his traditional values and religion. With the advocacy interpreting, I was given the opportunity as an interpreter to brievely point out that this is a standard question that Health professional ask amongst other questions to understand gather information about the patient way of life.

You might have read about the big scandal around the unqualified court interpreter . Cases like this one, are more frequent than we think. Every day, cases are adjourned and public money is wasted as a consequence.

When the services of an interpreter are requested ,we do not often know what to expect and how to work efficiently with the help of an interpreter: Is the interpreter qualified ? What is the interpreter’s experience in the field? Are you outsourcing the right interpreter? Is the interpreter conveying the information in the most efficient way? I will answer all these questions and give you the keys to hire the right interpreter and to communicate efficiently through an interpreter. You will be surprised how little tips can make a three way communication more efficient and helpful. I will also guide you through questions to ask when hiring an interpreter as well as advising you what form of interpreting is the most appropriate for your setting.
